Help is Available to Stop or Prevent Domestic Violence

In late May this year, a woman was shot multiple times in the head and chest in the San Ysidro neighborhood of San Diego. She was last reported as being in critical condition and facing serious, life-threatening injuries. The police had reason to believe she knew her attacker, and the case was being investigated by the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1 (800) 799-SAFE (799-7233).

The San Diego Family Justice Center has a comprehensive set of resources to help victims of family violence. At the center you can meet with an advocate, arrange to get a restraining order, make plans for your family’s safety, talk to a police officer or prosecutor, get medical help, or find shelter information.

For more information or to get a restraining order on your own, you may try the Domestic violence page at the California Courts Online Self-Help Center. You will need to complete the Request for Domestic Violence Restraining Order (DV-100) and California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS) Information Form (CLETS-001) and file them with the clerk in the appropriate courthouse.

An attorney can also be a valuable resource in helping you to obtain a restraining order, making sure that the procedures are followed properly and that a TRO is granted promptly and successfully, addressing all of your needs. If you are emotionally distraught or taking care of young children, having an experienced lawyer on your side can take some of the burden off of you so you can devote more time to taking care of yourself and your family. Also, if you are in a marriage or other domestic relationship, an experienced family law attorney can also guide you through other issues such as divorce or separation and how they may be impacted by domestic violence issues.
